England lose early wickets

England were facing an uphill battle in the first Test against West Indies at Sabina Park after losing two wickets before lunch on the fourth day.

Opener Alastair Cook and Ian Bell both perished in the 10 overs before the first interval as England limped to 11 for two, a significant deficit of 63 runs.

Left-hander Cook was snapped up at the second attempt by Devon Smith in the slips, off fast bowler Jerome Taylor, as the tourists made a poor start.

It was the second time that Cook, the unofficial vice-captain, had failed in the contest and England were in need of consolidation on a slow surface.

But Warwickshire's Bell, under pressure for his place on the eve of this series due to an extended run of poor form, was prised out by giant left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn before the interval.

Bell's attempt to cut a ball too close to him resulted in a bottom edge being snaffled by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin.

Earlier, Stuart Broad claimed a maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket as West Indies were dismissed for 392.

Nottinghamshire's Broad removed overnight pair Brendan Nash and Benn in just over half-an-hour this morning.

Fast bowler Steve Harmison controversially wrapped up the innings when umpire Tony Hill adjudged that Daren Powell had edged a bouncer on its way through to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

It led to a huge delay as Powell challenged the decision in the expectation of a reprieve, and although television replays suggested daylight between bat and ball, third official Daryl Harper could not provide conclusive evidence that no contact was made and England trudged off after 157.4 overs in the field.
