England may drop Gomarsall
19 January 2008
The Harlequins scrum-half faces a struggle to retain his place for Saturday's World Cup semi-final rematch against France in Paris.
Gomarsall, who has started the last seven England Tests, could be replaced by Sale Sharks number nine Richard Wigglesworth.
Wigglesworth made his Test debut when he went on as a second-half replacement for 33-year-old Gomarsall in Rome, impressing many observers.
England head coach Brian Ashton is due to name the starting line-up today, with props Andrew Sheridan and Phil Vickery poised to reappear.
Sheridan (infected cut) and Vickery (stomach bug) missed the Stadio Flaminio encounter, although their respective front-row deputies, Tim Payne and Matt Stevens, both produced solid displays.
One player definitely out of the running, though, is London Irish back Shane Geraghty.
Geraghty has returned to his club from England's training base in Bath for further investigation and assessment on a knee injury.
Wing Paul Sackey (thumb), centre Jamie Noon (hamstring) and lock Steve Borthwick (knee) all sat out their clubs' Premiership games at the weekend but look as though they will be available for selection.
