England on course to save Test

England were on course to keep the series alive by saving the second Test against Sri Lanka at the SSC.

Despite losing two wickets in the first hour of the afternoon session, which gave their hopes a small jolt, Michael Vaughan's team were firmly in control on 250 for three at tea - a lead of 53 runs.

Earlier they lost Alastair Cook to the first ball after lunch and Ian Bell needlessly caught at long-on, dismissals which left them seven runs ahead with seven wickets in hand.

All of England's top three made half-centuries but once again none of them turned starts into hundreds.
