Left-hander Anderson edged behind in the second over of the second morning but England countered some hostile bowling to reach 359 for four at drinks.
Fidel Edwards proved the main threat for West Indies and, having removed Andrew Strauss for 169 late yesterday evening, made it two wickets in quick succession when Anderson poked at a delivery outside off-stump.
With signs of variable bounce on this hastily-prepared Test pitch more prevalent this morning, England profited from playing their shots.
Kevin Pietersen opened his account for the day with a glorious cover drive for four off Jerome Taylor in the first over.
He survived a half-chance on 25, however, when immediately after pulling a second boundary, he jabbed a full toss back at Fidel Edwards, who could not seize the opportunity in his follow-through.
Paul Collingwood dominated the scoring, after fortuitously getting off the mark first ball when a short delivery looped over gully to safety.
Collingwood cut and pulled impressively in the face of a more concentrated assault from the West Indian pacemen.
And with deliveries beginning to shoot and fly intermittently, it gave England hope that further surface deterioration will aid their bid to level the series.
