England play waiting game

England and Alastair Cook were set for a long wait before the left-handed opener might get his chance to reach a new career-best score, as forecast rain began to sweep across Riverside.

Prospects for day two of the second npower Test against the West Indies were already looking bleak, with full covers on and umbrellas up all around the ground shortly before the scheduled start time of 11am.

Cook closed last night on 126 not out in England's 302 for two, after he and his Essex team-mate Ravi Bopara (108) had shared a second-wicket stand of 213. The highest of his nine Test hundreds so far was his unbeaten 139 against the Windies in Barbados two months ago.

A long delay today was more in England's favour than the West Indies', the tourists needing to somehow win this match to salvage a series draw and retain the Wisden Trophy.
