England ranks reduced again
30 January 2008
Abendanon reported for England duty at Pennyhill Park on Sunday night when it was decided the damaged big toe joint on his left foot required a scan. Although an operation is not necessary, the scan confirmed that the he must rest for a further two to four weeks.
A statement read: "Nick returned to his club last night (Tuesday) and will be treated by the Bath medical team.
"The England medics will remain in close contact with the club and player."
England have opted not to call-up a replacement for Abendanon, who was capped twice in 2007.
The 22-year-old looked set to start in the opening autumn international against Pacific Islanders a week on Saturday but head coach Martin Johnson must now reassess his options.
Mathew Tait is struggling with a hamstring problem while another alternative, Josh Lewsey, was sent back to Wasps on Tuesday.
If Tait fails to recover, Johnson will have to select uncapped London Irish three-quarter Delon Armitage in a position that has become a problematic for England.
Leicester hooker George Chuter will not be available for club duty this weekend after suffering a mild ligament strain.
