England recall Sidebottom

England's injury crisis among their seam bowling ranks has prompted them to recall left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom after a six-year absence for this week's second npower Test against West Indies.

Nottinghamshire seamer Sidebottom, who played one Test against Pakistan in 2001, has been included in a 13-man squad for Friday's Test at Headingley after Matthew Hoggard was ruled out with a thigh strain.

Key all-rounder Andrew Flintoff still remains a doubt after missing the drawn opening Test at Lord's with an ankle problem, but has been included in the squad so coach Peter Moores can monitor his fitness at Lord's during practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

Lancashire seamer James Anderson is also included in the squad and is expected to battle it out with Sidebottom to replace Hoggard, who is hopeful of being fit for the third Test at Old Trafford starting on June 7, while the side will be led by returning captain Michael Vaughan.

The Yorkshire batsman has played only one LV County Championship match all season after breaking a finger against Hampshire, but has been recalled to the squad despite his lack of match practice and replaces Middlesex batsman Owais Shah.

"The inclusion of James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom in the squad is designed to provide us with different options within our pace bowling unit," explained chairman of selectors David Graveney.

"With Jon Lewis and Stuart Broad unavailable through injury, we were keen to identify a bowler who could add variety to the attack.

"Ryan has been a consistent performer for Nottinghamshire over the last two seasons, is familiar with the Headingley pitch through his time with Yorkshire and deserves a further opportunity at this level."

The squad announcement was delayed while Hoggard, Flintoff and Vaughan had fitness tests to determine their readiness for Test match action later this week.

Hoggard, who limped out of the Lord's match having bowled just 10.1 overs, was always regarded as a doubt while Vaughan has steadily improved over the last week even if he is yet to test his finger in a match situation.
