England secure Calcutta Cup victory

England regained the Calcutta Cup with a 26-12 success - but the manner in which they kept Scotland waiting for their first Twickenham victory since 1983 was not the resounding success it threatened to be.

The Scots went ahead with an early Chris Paterson penalty, but Martin Johnson's side overcame the loss of prop Phil Vickery and then scrum-half Harry Ellis on a stretcher with a gashed head to take control before half-time.

Tries came from wing Ugo Monye and centre Riki Flutey, and after the break Toby Flood added a second penalty. From 18-3 down, though, the Scots clawed their way back to 18-12 thanks to two more penalties from Paterson and one from Phil Godman, but Danny Care dropped a goal eight minutes from time and five minutes later Mathew Tait, on for Monye, scored England's third try.

Paterson gave Scotland a 3-0 lead after Harry Ellis was penalised for not rolling away and Thom Evans came within a metre of scoring a brilliant breakaway try but was stopped by a superb tackle from Monye.

England soon took the lead with a slick move featuring Flutey and Flood creating the chance for Monye to slip out of Paterson's cover tackle and score his first Test try.

Scotland made a mess of a lineout just five metres out and England spread the ball left and Flutey cut between two defenders and wriggled his way to the line for a try confirmed by the television officials.

England's poor discipline allowed Scotland to chip away at their lead in the second half with Paterson slotting two more efforts to finish the tournament with a 100% record.

Godman joined in on the act with a long-range strike but Scotland could not get close enough to England.

Care slotted a drop goal to make it 21-12 and Tait rounded off the victory with a neatly-taken try in the corner.
