England set achievable target

New Zealand resumed the final day 269 ahead on 147 for eight hoping to resist England long enough to set a challenging target on the final day wicket at Seddon Park.
They achieved that with New Zealand declaring on 177 for nine after captain Daniel Vettori helped to add a quickfire 26 in the opening six overs.
Vettori, who resumed overnight on 13, exploited England's decision to keep left-arm spinner Monty Panesar in the attack rather than go for an all-seam attack as they attempted to buy precious time.
He hit Panesar for successive boundaries in the third over of the day and then hit Ryan Sidebottom for further fours in successive over to add precious runs to the tourists' victory target.
But in the sixth over of the day, Vettori's aggressive approach caused his downfall when he attempted to hit over the top and was caught by Alastair Cook to earn Sidebottom his 10th wicket of the match.
Just four runs later Vettori called a halt on the innings to give England an opportunity to score at 3.7 runs an over to win an unexpected first Test triumph.
