James Anderson helped add 16 runs when play resumed before Monty Panesar edged Chris Martin to Ross Taylor at second slip as England were dismissed for 293.
Anderson had earlier passed a fitness test on his injured left ankle to take his place in attack as England look to level the series at 1-1.
The 25-year-old Lancashire seamer prompted a scare on Friday having twisted his ankle playing football after play finished at the Basin Reserve, leaving the ground on crutches.
But after intensive ice treatment overnight Anderson was put through a thorough workout before play this morning and was given the all-clear to lead England's attack.
New Zealand's highest fourth innings total at basin reserve is 286, while the highest successful fourth innings total to win a game at the ground is Pakistan's 277 for three in 2003.
