England's marathon bid to save the second npower Test against South Africa at Headingley began positively on the fourth morning.

Nightwatchman James Anderson and opener Alastair Cook negotiated the opening 45 minutes in the team's bid to bat the majority of the final two days.

Having begun on 50 for two - after Andrew Strauss and captain Michael Vaughan were prised out on Sunday evening - the third-wicket pair moved the score on to 77 for two - still 242 runs adrift.
