England start with win

England made a solid if unspectacular start to their Emirates Dubai Sevens campaign with a 27-12 victory over Tunisia.

Fijian-born loose-forward Isoa Damudamu and Bristol winger Anthony Elliot scored two tries apiece.

Ebbw Vale's Simon Hunt touched down for England's fifth - but they conceded two soft tries which frustrated head coach Ben Ryan.

England will need to learn quickly before tackling Canada and then reigning Dubai champions South Africa later today.

Ryan said: "It is always hard to get out of the traps in the first game of any tournament and the first game of the series, with so many new guys, the onus was on getting a win and we did that.

"We got a good lesson in getting turned over and missing one-on-one tackles - if you do that you end up under your own posts - but we scored five tries and got a win under our belt against a side who are really stubborn. It gives us a good starting point."

Wales also made a winning start, producing a strong second-half performance to beat the United States 22-7.

Newport Gwent Dragons winger Gareth Chapman opened the scoring for Wales, cutting inside two men before accelerating for the line, but America hit back and the score was tied 7-7 at half-time.

It was a physical contest which did not play to Wales' strengths but Chapman's pace and movement caused America constant problems and Lee Williams secured the win with two well-taken tries.

Scotland, though, suffered a thumping 41-5 defeat to reigning World Series champions New Zealand in the opening match of the tournament.
