England strike twice

England struck twice with the new ball to further undermine West Indies' slim hopes of levelling the NatWest Series at Edgbaston.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan were both caught attempting attacking strokes inside the first four overs of the innings.

Set an unlikely 329 for victory - after England registered their third-highest score in 50-over history - the West Indians were 59 for two in the 14th over.

Left-hander Gayle mishit a pull to mid-on off Stuart Broad and Sarwan succumbed to a brilliant reaction catch from England captain Andrew Strauss, whose outstretched left hand intercepted a drive off James Anderson at cover.

It needed something special from one of the West Indies' big three and although Gayle and Sarwan began with early boundaries, it left Shivnarine Chanderpaul to negotiate the steep chase.

A rain shower fell between the two early dismissals and another one drove the players from the field shortly after 4pm.

Earlier, Matt Prior's 87, his highest score in a one-day international, and 75 from Owais Shah helped England to their highest score against West Indies in limited-overs matches.
