England unchanged at Riverside

England selected an unchanged team to face West Indies in the second npower Test at Riverside, following their 10-wicket win at Lord's.

Batsman Ian Bell and extra seamer Ryan Sidebottom were therefore the men to miss out, as first-Test debutant Graham Onions got his expected chance to repeat his success on his home ground.

West Indies also picked the same XI, needing to win here to salvage a drawn series and retain the Wisden Trophy.

On an increasingly overcast morning, England won the toss and chose to bat first.

It was hard to conclude that many more, if any, than the paltry 3,000 who had reportedly bought tickets were in attendance by the time Jerome Taylor bowled the first ball of the match to Andrew Strauss.

Taylor and his new-ball partner Fidel Edwards each struggled to find their line initially, to the extent that neither Strauss nor Alastair Cook was required to play a shot until the 11th legitimate delivery of the morning.

There was swing available, though, confirmed when Strauss aimed an off-drive at Taylor but missed as the ball snaked past his outside edge to the wicketkeeper.

Pace and bounce were not so abundant in a surface of benign appearance. It was not until the fourth over that Cook registered England's first run off the bat, a poke wide of cover off Edwards.

Strauss needed 18 deliveries in all to follow suit by pushing an opening single into the leg-side off Edwards.

After the England captain had collected England's first boundary - a cover drive in Edwards' next over - the score moved to a low-key 12 for none with half an hour gone.
