England unhappy about Aussie signings

England have expressed their "disappointment" at counties hiring Australian players in the early part of the season to aid their preparation for the Ashes.

National selector Geoff Miller has indicated his concern about the decision by Middlesex to sign emerging opener Phil Hughes in the early weeks of the summer and Kent to snap up seamer Stuart Clark as he recovers from a long lay-off following an elbow operation.

"It's disappointing to hear Kent have signed a bowler who has played in English conditions before and is just coming back to fitness," said Miller, who is out in the West Indies with England's one-day squad.

"Middlesex have already signed a batsman in Phil Hughes who has not had experience of English conditions before and now will have that for the Ashes - I don't think this would happen the other way around," he added.

Miller's concern comes at a time when England have gone 13 international matches without success this winter while Australia have turned around their own fortunes with an impressive Test series success in South Africa.
