England's patience pays dividends

England were rewarded for their patience as they finally began to make inroads into India's batting line-up on day two of the final Test.

Off-spinner Graeme Swann began England's recovery with three wickets in 10 overs during the afternoon session - while left-arm orthodox Monty Panesar grabbed two victims after tea as India lost seven wickets for 98 to reach 446 for nine.

Resuming on 179 for one, Gautam Gambhir (179) and Rahul Dravid (136) extended their partnership to establish a second-wicket record against England - and the second highest stand ever for India against England.

Former India captain Dravid, who resumed overnight on 65, was the first to reach his milestone with a clip off his legs for a single off James Anderson to bring up his 26th Test century.

Gambhir reached his first landmark shortly before lunch when he progressed to 142 with a two off Paul Collingwood's first over of the series, reaching 1,000 Test runs in 2008 in only eight matches.

But India's second-highest stand for any wicket against England was finally broken when Gambhir attempted to hit Swann over the top and gave a looping catch to Alastair Cook at point.

Just four overs later Dravid fell in similar manner when he also tried to hit Swann over the top but mis-hit the shot high in the air for Monty Panesar to take a well-judged catch at mid-off.

Sachin Tendulkar lasted just six overs before attempting to sweep Swann and falling lbw for 11 and Andrew Flintoff trapped lbw VVS Laxman lbw.

Panesar ended Yuvraj Singh's determined innings of 27 with a bat-pad catch and also halted Harbhajan Singh's hard-hitting 24 off 21 balls before Flintoff bowled Zaheer Khan.
