It is understood the former England coach is poised to sign a lucrative contract at Eastlands.

Prospective owner Thaksin Shinawatra's advisors believe the 59-year-old Swede is the man to take City forward and establish the club as a force in the Barclays Premiership.

Eriksson is keen to return to work after a year-long absence from the game. And Thaksin has promised him a £50million transfer kitty to dip into. That kind of money should attract some top names.

It has been reported Eriksson has sounded out Roland Andersson about becoming his assistant should he accept Manchester City's offer and take over as manager.

Andersson revealed the former England coach had contacted him but he is delaying a decision until Eriksson's position is finalised.

Currently Sweden's assistant coach, Andersson said he was "flattered" to be offered the role.

"I was contacted by Sven [about being assistant coach]," he told the Swedish Football Association's official website, www.svenskfotboll.se. "He said he was considering an offer to become Manchester City manager.

"I often speak with Sven and Tord Grip about football matters. We have known each other for many years.

"Of course I am flattered [by the offer] but, to really consider it, he has to have the position of manager first. If he is not the manager, there is nothing to discuss."
