FA insist 'no timescale' on new boss

Football Association chiefs insist they will not be rushed into appointing the new England manager in succession to Steve McClaren.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick will hold a series of meetings with senior footballing figures after he gets back from Sunday's 2010 World Cup qualifying draw in Durban. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is one of those Barwick will consult, as well as England players John Terry and Steven Gerrard.

FA communications director Adrian Bevington told PA Sport: "Brian plans to engage in discussions with a number of people with experience in football and Arsene Wenger is one of the people on that list. He will also speak to one or two senior players. The process really kicks in when Brian gets back from the World Cup draw but we are not putting a time-scale on it."

He added: "There is no deadline - the most important thing is to get the right man."

England missed out on a place among the top seeds after their defeat by Croatia led to them being overtaken by Greece in FIFA's world rankings on which the seedings will be based for the draw.

Bevington added: "This will be the first challenge of the new manager and it's no good worrying about who is going to be in England's group, we just have to get on with it.

"Of course we are disappointed that we have dropped into the pot of second seeds but we have to forget about that as tomorrow the planning for the 2010 World Cup starts in earnest.

"We have been in the second tier before and come through, and our key objective is to get the right man in place to make sure we do so again."

Greece overtook England by just a single point in the rankings courtesy of their victories in two Euro 2008 qualifiers - Otto Rehhagel's side gained 80 points to a total of 1114 while England dropped 24 points to 1113 after their dismal defeat by Croatia.

It means England will have to face one of the top seeds - the likes of Italy, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain - and as only the nine group winners automatically secure qualification, the task may not be a straightforward one.
