FAI probe Gracia comments

Carlos Gracia faces serious sanctions if his comments regarding racial discrimination in England are found to be accurate.

Gracia, head of Spain's motorsport federation, has caused a storm ahead of this weekend's title-deciding showdown in the Brazilian Grand at Interlagos.

Apparently questioned about the support Lewis Hamilton enjoys in England and the media's desire to see an English world champion, he is quoted in Spanish daily newspaper, El Publico, as saying: "It's understandable they want to make the most of it. But given how racist they are in England, the fact that they have to rely on a coloured driver..."

Gracia maintains he was misinterpreted and the quote was taken out of context, but nevertheless it has added fuel to the fire ahead of the race.

It was Gracia who spoke to FIA president Max Mosley on behalf of Alonso as he was concerned about the prospect of inequality in the McLaren team and Hamilton receiving preferential treatment.

That prompted Mosley to appoint an FIA official to oversee that no favouritism unfolds in the McLaren garage this weekend.

In light of this latest furore, the FIA are far from enamoured and are currently investigating the matter.

A spokesman said: "The FIA have noted the recent press comments attributed to the president of the Spanish Motor Sport Authority and we have received his assurance that such comments have been inaccurately reported.

"The prohibition of racial, political or religious discrimination is fundamental to the FIA's role as the governing body of international motor sport. No compromise or violation of this prohibition will ever be acceptable."
