Faldo struggles at Open

The day after his 50th birthday, Nick Faldo matched his worst-ever score in the British Open with an eight over par 79 at Carnoustie.

Europe's Ryder Cup captain - Open champion in 1987, 1990 and 1992 - is playing his first tournament of the year, having turned his attentions to a new career as a television analyst in America.

His only previous 79 was also at Carnoustie, in the second round eight years ago. And that followed an opening 78.

Faldo makes his debut in over-50s golf in next week's Senior British Open at Muirfield, scene of two of his victories.

He holds the record for the most rounds in the 60s in Open history with 37, but adding to that tally was never on from the moment he bogeyed three of the first five holes. Even after saving a bogey with a long putt on the last he motioned as if to break his belly putter over his knee.
