Fallon back in the groove

Kieren Fallon appeared happy just to be back in action after finishing second on his return to the saddle at Lingfield.

The jockey made his comeback from an 18-month suspension by steering Rare Malt into the runner-up spot behind the Hayley Turner-ridden Mr Mahoganeigh in the Withyham Median Auction Maiden Stakes. He was out of luck on his other three rides at the Surrey venue.

"I enjoy coming to the course, it's the only thing I know and the only thing I want to do. I'm just hoping I can finish the day off. My last ride is at Kempton at 8.50pm so hopefully I can survive that long!" he admitted.

"Things are going great at the moment and obviously with the recession things haven't been good for racing, but I think things are picking back up anyway. I just want to ride as many winners as I can and hopefully have a crack at the championship next year.

"Hopefully now I can feel as good on the track as I do at home. It doesn't seem as though much has changed in the weighing room and the boys are still doing their own thing.

"There are a few new faces in there that I wouldn't have ridden against before. You're all close in the weighing room but once you get out on the track, you're an individual."

Fallon was again out of luck in the Holtye Median Auction Maiden Stakes as his mount Roodee King could finish only a well-beaten fourth. The Pat Morris inmate was restrained early but the warning signs were evident for his supporters as Fallon began to get to work turning for home.

Although he stayed on late in the day, the three-year-old could not pick up when it mattered and was ultimately well held as Chantilly Jewel (7-1) came home a ready winner. On his way back to the weighing room, Fallon quipped: "I'm getting fitter."

The rider fared no better when he could only manage fifth on Diriculous for Terry Mills in the Burstow Handicap, which was won convincingly by Jaconet, before Satwa Gold failed to land a blow under Fallon in the Felbridge Handicap.
