Farrell raring to go

Andy Farrell is determined to enjoy the occasion when he faces the daunting double mission of firing England's backs and kicking goals against World Cup rivals South Africa.

Farrell will replace hip injury victim Olly Barkley for England's biggest Test match since they won the 2003 World Cup and his combination with Mike Catt in the critical fly-half/inside centre area is crucial to English hopes of a shock Pool A victory.

Farrell said: "You can only try your best. I've been in situations like this before, and the best thing to do is not even think about it, just get on with it and try to enjoy the occasion."

He added: "Whatever happens, I am happy to do.

"The 10 and 12s have been swapping in and out, anyway. Whoever is at 10 and 12 will share the workload and responsibility.

"The way Brian Ashton (England head coach) likes to play, he likes 10 and 12 to keep control of the game. You tend to play a bit of 10 when you are at 12 anyway."

As for the considerable goal-kicking responsibility, former Great Britain rugby league captain Farrell added: "If you miss you are a villain, if you kick them all you are a hero.

"The main thing is to do what you do in training and try and do nothing different.

"It is a case of thinking about nothing but the kick, rather than the occasion. It is just a matter of being relaxed and concentrated on what you have been practising."

Farrell has never played a senior game of union at number 10.
