Fasth and Stadler lead the way

Swede Niclas Fasth shares a three-shot lead with American Kevin Stadler on eight under par after the opening round of the HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

Fasth eagled the 550-yard par-five second and shot seven birdies on his way to a 64, with Vijay Singh the nearest challenger on five under.

Paul Casey, sixth and seventh in the previous two tournaments in China, is on four under along with US Open champion Angel Cabrera, world number two Phil Mickelson and Open champion Padraig Harrington.

Harrington said afterwards: "I holed a couple of putts, if I had holed a couple of short ones, I would be up there myself.

"It doesn't matter how tough you set up the golf course, how much water there is, somebody is going to play well."
