Federer crashes out

Roger Federer was left to rue another under-par performance after crashing out of the Sony Ericsson Open to Andy Roddick.

The world number one has not gone this long into a season without lifting a title since 2000, the last year he failed to win a championship.

"I think I did well to hang in there," said Federer, who lost the quarter-final clash 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-3. "Maybe this is one of the matches I should have won against him because he's had some other ones where I think he was supposed to win, but this time around it went his way."

Federer's loss follows a poor start to a season hampered by illness.

Defeat to eventual Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the season-opening grand slam event was followed by a first-round exit in Dubai, after which the 26-year-old revealed he had been suffering from glandular fever.

And while Federer claims he is now "back to normal" after his illness, he continues to fall short of his lofty standards, having also suffered a semi-final defeat to 98th-ranked American Mardy Fish at Indian Wells last month.

By contrast, Roddick has enjoyed a solid start to season, having clinched tournament victories in Dubai and San Jose.

"To kind of build on Dubai and to have wins over (players who are ranked) one, two and three in the world early in the season is a good thing," Roddick said.

"It's probably what's been missing the last two, three years, so it is encouraging."
