Federer ends Nadal win streak

21 January 2007
Nadal had won his previous 81 games on the surface, and also possessed an unbeaten record against the Swiss on the dirt.
However, Federer finally got the better of the left-hander, coming back from a sluggish first set to win 2-6 6-2 6-0.
Nadal`s run on clay has seen him set a new record for consecutive victories on any surface, and it appeared he was set to notch win number 82 when he cruised through a first set in which Federer struggled to find his range.
But the Australian Open champion raised his game and Nadal uncharacteristically buckled.
Federer levelled the match and then ran away with the decider, inflicting on Nadal a first defeat on clay since April 2005, when he lost in Valencia to Igor Andreev.
It also represented a welcome return to form for Federer, who has looked short of his best in recent weeks and recently parted company with coach Tony Roche, with the French Open starting in just over a week.
