Federer held nerve

The Swiss top seed and world number one defeated the emerging Serbian 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to move past Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg on the all-time grand slam winners list and equal Roy Emerson's feat of 12 slam titles at the age of 26.
Federer said: "I've had an upset stomach the last few days, nervous, shaking, cold hands before the match, I've had it all. I'm supposed to be the experienced guy who has got used to the situation but you never do get used to it."
He added: "I think straight sets is a bit brutal for Novak to be honest," Federer said. "He deserved better than that but he had a fantastic run, not just at this tournament but the entire year."
What Federer did do, however, was get his nerves out of the way early while he noticed Djokovic suffering throughout the match.
"It's funny because I played him in Montreal and it was a similar situation. I served for the first set at 6-5, 40-0. This time round he had it and I came back and I got the momentum for the tie-break and I went on to win it.
"It's crazy if you think about it, how similar those matches are. This time it swung my way but it shows you always have a chance.
"The same thing happened to me in Montreal, I missed a few shots, the guy hit a few good shots and all of a sudden is back into the set.
"This time around I could do it but I felt he was really getting tense and was nervous serving and from the baseline he was afraid to hit the ball, and that was with the wind in his back. So I was quite surprised to get out of that game but in the end it was key and I won that first set."
