Federer into last four

Roger Federer survived a mid-match wobble to ultimately breeze into the semi-finals of the French Open at the expense of Tommy Robredo on Tuesday.

The world number one claimed a 7-5 1-6 6-1 6-2 quarter-final victory on Philippe Chatrier court to set up a last-four meeting with Nikolay Davydenko, but the Swiss did not have it all his own way.

After winning a tight first set, his form dipped dramatically and he landed just 28% of his first serves in a second set he lost convincingly.

But Federer regained his composure and went on to play some of his best tennis of the tournament against the ninth seed, from Spain.

The third was claimed in just 20 minutes and Federer broke a by-now beleaguered Robredo three times in the fourth to advance to the semis.

The top seed is looking to claim his first Roland Garros title. Davydenko sealed the semi-final showdown with Federer by sweeping past Guillermo Canas in straight sets on Suzanne Lenglen court.

The fourth seed was a 7-5 6-4 6-4 winner over the Argentinian in three hours, clinching the victory with one of his countless forehand winners down the line.

It will be the Russian's second Roland Garros semi-final in three years, but he has not beaten Federer in eight attempts overall.

The other two quarter-finals are played on Wednesday, with reigning champion Rafael Nadal taking on fellow Mallorcan Carlos Moya and Novak Djokovic - the sixth seed - meeting unseeded Russian Igor Andreev.
