Federer seals Masters Cup title

Roger Federer has won the Tennis Masters Cup after a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory over David Ferrer in Shanghai.

The world number one saved a break point in the second game then broke in the third before going on to take the first set 6-2. Spaniard Ferrer grew into the game but Federer broke twice in the second frame before sweeping through the third for his fourth Masters Cup title in five years.

After the victory, he said in comments broadcast on Sky Sports 2: "I am so happy. This is the year-end tournament that only the best can make it to so to win it again means a lot."

It was the Swiss star's eighth title of the year and his eighth victory in as many career meetings against Ferrer.

Ferrer, who was cheered on all week by a vocal Spanish contingent, was the only player to make it through the group stages of the tournament unbeaten and Federer predicted he would be back at the showpiece tournament next year.

He said: "I'd like to congratulate David because he has won the same amount of matches as me. Have some rest and I'll see you again next year."

Ferrer believes he lost to the best player the game has ever seen.

He said: "I want to say congratulations to Roger. He is the best in history. Thank you to the people - this week has been great for me. Thanks to the Spanish guys for supporting me."
