Ferdinand could face Roma

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand could face Roma in Wednesday's Champions League clash at Old Trafford despite suffering a foot injury in the draw at Middlesbrough.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson will make a decision over Ferdinand's fitness on the morning of the encounter. Should the England star fail to make it then either Gary Neville or Mikael Silvestre are poised to return for the quarter-final second leg match.

Ferguson said: "I am hoping Rio will play. His scan was clear, that was the important thing."

He added: "Therefore we are hoping we can get him fit to face Roma.

"We will report on Wednesday at 11am, so he will have to do something at that time."

Paul Scholes is set to make his 100th Champions League appearance while Nani could return to the squad after a thigh problem.

United are looking look to build on their 2-0 advantage from the first leg but Nemanja Vidic (knee), Darren Fletcher (knee) and Louis Saha (hamstring) remain sidelined through injury.
