The Nigerian lost a year of his career after getting involved in a bitter tug of war between United and Chelsea and, on his first appearance against the Red Devils, was replaced by Joe Cole at half-time.

But United boss Ferguson felt the young midfielder should not have lasted even that long, saying: "Mikel was lucky to be on the pitch because it was a bad tackle."

Ferguson admitted his side did not deserve any more than the draw which maintained their seven-point lead at the Premiership summit.

However, he did think United should have had a penalty when Michael Essien sent Eagles flying in the box during those fractious early moments after half-time.

"It was important for us not to get beaten because Chelsea have a very good home record," said Ferguson.

"Maybe when people saw our team they thought we were not interested. We were interested okay. Manchester United has to try and win all its games.

"I was pleased with our performance. Chelsea only started getting chances in the final 15 minutes when our young players started to die, which was understandable given the pace of the game.

"In that sense we retained our honour, but I also felt we should have had a penalty kick, which would have ended Chelsea's unbeaten home record, so that is a pity."
