Fergie thrilled with Tevez show

Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Carlos Tevez fully deserved his Community Shield man-of-the-match prize - he is just sorry it was not capped by a goal.

Despite being Manchester United's only orthodox striker at Wembley on Sunday, Tevez gave Portsmouth's beleaguered defence a torrid afternoon in a contest that United eventually won on penalties after a goalless 90 minutes.

"The decision to make him man of the match was fully justified." said Ferguson. "It was a superb performance. He was a constant thorn to Portsmouth and it is just a pity he did not get a goal."

He added: "Carlos came to us a year ago, straight after the Copa America. His fitness now is light years ahead of where it was then and we are expecting big things from him.

"The great thing about Tevez is that he has a heart to play the game. He is not intimidated at all, he fights for every ball and is a real handful."

Although Wayne Rooney could be back on Sunday when the Premier League champions begin the defence of their title against Newcastle at Old Trafford, Ferguson has made it plain he would like to sign a new striker, with Thierry Henry a surprise name in the frame.

"There is a name every day," said Ferguson when asked whether Henry was a genuine possibility. "I can't answer the question because I don't have the right answer.

"But it is possible I will sign someone this week. We are trying and we are looking at one or two options.

"It has been a pressing concern since the end of last season. We like to operate with four strikers and we have not been able to do that. Hopefully we will get something done."
