Ferguson - There is plenty to play for

Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to get drawn into the belief that this season's Premier League title is almost in the bag.

Ryan Giggs' second-half winner proved enough for Manchester United to overcome West Ham at Upton Park and send them back to the top of the league, two points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand.

"Mistakes can be made," said the United boss.

With Chelsea and Arsenal falling further off the pace with goalless draws this weekend and Aston Villa not expected to sustain their present impressive form, most pundits now feel Liverpool are the only threat to United's hopes of landing an 18th league title.

But Ferguson has been around too long to write anyone off just yet.

Ferguson added: "We had an 11 point lead over Arsenal in 1998 and lost the league, so we are not counting our chickens.

"We shouldn't either because this game can come and bite you. This is a fantastic result and performance. It is time to kick on."

Ferguson admitted he was struggling to recall the last time Giggs scored with his right foot.

However, after stepping inside Carlton Cole and charging in off the touchline, that is exactly what Giggs did, his first goal of the season maintaining his personal record of scoring in every Premier League season.

"I am searching my memory bank for the last time Ryan scored with his right foot," laughed Ferguson. "I think it was against Coventry 12 years ago. Ryan truly is a credit to the game. If anyone wants an example of how to dedicate themselves to football, you could have no greater example than Ryan Giggs."
