Ferguson fired up by Saturday success

Captain Barry Ferguson believes Scotland's win over Ukraine epitomised the character within the national team camp as they continue their charge towards qualification for Euro 2008.

The crucial 3-1 victory at Hampden Park allowed the Scots to edge ever closer to next summer's finals and maintain the incredible form which sees them remain at the top of qualifying Group B with two matches remaining.

"It was a great win for us," he said. "They came back and got their goal but we showed the character we have by containing them and getting the third goal which killed the game."

He added: "There was a lot of pressure but I thought the guys coped really well and did well to get the three points.

"We wanted a good start but we were a bit surprised ourselves when we got two goals in the first 10 minutes. But it was deserved because we started on fire."

More than 51,000 fans packed into the national stadium on Saturday and Ferguson said: "Confidence is high just now and the atmosphere and the fans really helped us. It was like a 12th man out there, it was fantastic."
