Not since second practice at the third grand prix of the year in Bahrain had Ferrari topped the timesheets, with McLaren dominating proceedings.
But Felipe Massa and the under-performing Kimi Raikkonen finally seem to have got their act together as the duo were easily head and shoulders above their rivals around Magny-Cours.
Raikkonen, currently trailing championship leader Lewis Hamilton by 26 points, posted the fastest time of the day in the first of the two 90-minute sessions.
The Finn clocked one minute 15.382 seconds for the 4.411km track, faster than Michael Schumacher's pole time of a year ago, with Massa just 0.065secs adrift.
It was roles reversed later in the day, with Massa (1:15.453) quickest in the second timed outing - Raikkonen was a mere 0.035secs adrift.
The Toro Rosso - backed by a Ferrari engine - of Scott Speed, seemingly running on petrol fumes, was third fastest in the afternoon ahead of Hamilton.
The 22-year-old Briton, who leads the world championship by 10 points from team-mate Fernando Alonso, was down in fourth just over three tenths of a second adrift.
