Five-star Anderson fires England

James Anderson's career-best Test figures enhanced England's position in the opening npower Test against India at Lord's.

Less than half the scheduled 98 overs were possible on the third day due to two lengthy stoppages for showers but Anderson helped secure a a healthy first-innings advantage of 97 before the first of those.

Although England lost both openers in an afternoon session restricted to just one hour and 20 minutes, captain Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen negotiated a tricky spell in the evening to close on 77 for two - an overall advantage of 174.

Openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook had shared a 40-run stand but both perished to left-armer Zaheer Khan in consecutive overs of an intriguing contest.

Earlier, India's innings was wrapped up in swift fashion by Lancashire paceman Anderson and fellow swing bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

Anderson finished with stunning figures of 24.2-8-42-5 while Sidebottom claimed four for 65.
