Fixtures hamper performance - Hoggard

England seamer Matthew Hoggard believes it is impossible for international players to consistently perform at their best due to the proliferation of fixtures.

Hoggard feels that the demands placed on the players who play all formats of the international game are too great.

The 30-year-old told BBC Radio Five Live: "I am very lucky and unlucky - I am not part of the one-day team but if you are playing both at the top level there is no way you can be giving 100% just because of the volume of matches. It is more mental fatigue than physical fatigue."

Hoggard, who is preparing for December's Test series in Sri Lanka, did not feature in the recent one-day internationals or Twenty20 matches, but believes just playing in Test series is demanding enough.

He added: "I don't want to come across as a whingeing sportsman. We get well paid for what we do but we do spend a lot of time away from home.

"If you want the England team to perform to its maximum you need time to prepare and relax. It is mentally tiring and just being away from home is mentally tiring.

"You need a break, and you don't tend to get it with the schedule at the moment. Playing back-to-back Tests is very demanding. You can bowl for the last two days of a Test, have a day off and then be bowling again.

"It has got better with a mandatory three days between Tests...but you sometimes go into the second Test after three days, with a day of practice, still feeling under par."
