Fletcher: Freddie can be skipper again

Duncan Fletcher has backed Andrew Flintoff to reclaim the England captaincy one day.

The former England coach is highly critical of the all-rounder in his new autobiography, and revelations of Flintoff's drinking during last winter's Ashes tour caused controversy when the book was serialised by a national newspaper last week.

"If that foot lets him bowl as well as he can, there's no reason he shouldn't captain down the line," Fletcher told BBC One's Inside Sport programme.

The Zimbabwe-born former Glamorgan coach also defended his decision to publicise Flintoff's drinking in Australia, after his book revealed 'Freddie' had turned up for a training session under the influence of alcohol.

Fletcher insisted the revelation was needed to explain the decision to punish Flintoff after the 'Fredalo' affair.

"I just felt that I linked it directly to what had happened in Sydney, and just felt let down in such a serious situation," he added.

"I was under huge pressure at the time."
