Flintoff has not played a competitive match for more than four months but will join up with England's second team for their run of three one-day matches, starting in Mumbai.

Flintoff, 30, who will play as a specialist batsman as he bids to regain full fitness following an operation on a troublesome ankle problem, told The Sun: "It's great to be around a cricket team again and they are a terrific bunch of lads. People shouldn't expect too much from me in terms of scoring lots of runs, although it would be nice."

He added: "Everything has been going well but you can only do so much net practice. I'm ready for a match.

"I'll be playing as a batsman and fielder and I think I'll be batting at number five. I haven't bowled a ball since the operation - I'm still taking things steadily on that score."
