The all-rounder had tissue removed from the joint in an operation which the England and Wales Cricket Board medical team described as "routine" althougth they are refusing to put a timescale on the anticipated length of Flintoff's recovery period.
The ECB statement confirmed: "Andrew Flintoff today underwent an exploratory arthroscopy on his injured left ankle. Early signs are that the operation was routine, and Andrew will begin his rehabilitation accordingly following successful removal of tissue contributing to anterior impingement in the ankle."
Initial suggestions before Friday's surgery were that the 29-year-old could perhaps hope for a return in time for a three-match Test series against India, starting next month.
Flintoff had to miss the first two Tests against West Indies and was ruled out of the remainder of that four-match series when it was announced just this week he would have to have a third bout of surgery on his ankle.
"Andrew will require a programme of strengthening and proprioceptive work before he can start to return to training and bowling," the ECB statement explained.
"It is anticipated that he will aim to return to playing cricket before the end of the summer."
