The Essex all-rounder is the latest player to be given the opportunity to fill the void at the top of the order made by Marcus Trescothick's premature retirement from international cricket.
He was chosen as an opener during Sunday's emphatic six-wicket Twenty20 international defeat in Trinidad and stand-in England coach Andy Flower said: "I have high hopes for him. I think he's going to be a very fine cricketer for England."
He added: "The first thing that stands out for me is his love of the game and enthusiasm for the game and that's what drives him. I don't think he's driven by extrinsic factors, I think he's driven by the fact he wants to be a great player for England.
"He's also very talented, he has a lot of time to play the quicks. He has all the shots and he has to find the right combination of decisions to make that into a successful package."
