Flynn lost a front tooth after being hit in the face by a Jimmy Anderson bouncer on the first day of the second Test at Old Trafford on Friday.

It was initially expected he would be back when required should England make a breakthrough as the Kiwis resumed on 202 for four. But after having the remainder of two teeth taken out on Friday night, he has since suffered nausea and vomiting and is not expected to bat again in his team's first innings.

"In those circumstances we don't want him to go out there," said team manager Lindsay Crocker.

"Right from the start he wanted to go back out.

"It's the nature of the bloke, he's a very keen competitor and tough as old boots. But we're being sensible about it and he knows it's the right thing to do."
