Ford shrugs off travel sickness

Defence coach Mike Ford claims England will travel with "bags of confidence" to Marseille - despite an appalling away record since the 2003 World Cup.

The Stade Velodrome is arguably French rugby's most intimidating Test venue, a ground where New Zealand, South Africa and Australia have all failed to topple Les Bleus - and England lost by a point when they visited just before the last World Cup.

"For the first time in four years, we have been together for about seven or eight weeks, and the fact we have got the bonding going will help us massively," said Ford. "We have got a squad here that is full of experience - big-game players who understand how to win games."

One England player hoping to prove himself in that category is 22-year-old Wasps flanker Tom Rees.

Rees - tipped as a potential England great by forwards coach John Wells - could make a major impact on the World Cup.

He has shrugged off two frustrating injury setbacks - a knee problem, then hamstring trouble - to feature in Saturday's encounter.

Wells said: "Tom got big applause when he came on to the training pitch for the first time this week.

"As a coaching team, we think very highly of him, and the players do as well. We are hoping his injuries are behind him - he is a quality player who will add something to this side.

"Tom has had good players and coaches around him at Wasps. His defensive game is very good - the last six months of last season you saw more rounded performances from him.

"He has the potential to go on and be one of England's greats in that position."
