The 38-year-old, who will compete in his fifth Olympics in Beijing this summer, clocked 21.96secs at the competition in Croatia to retrieve his record from Simon Burnett in the process.

The six-time world short-course champion's previous best time had been 22.13, set in 2001.

Breaking the 22-second barrier launches Foster into the world's top 10 after a year which has seen the world record traded between Eamon Sullivan and Alain Bernard with the former the current holder with a time of 21.28.
