Foster has high hopes for Brits

Veteran sprinter Mark Foster goes into his fifth Olympic Games believing the relaxed atmosphere within the British swimming team will reap dividends when the action begins in the pool on Saturday.

Foster, who will compete in the 50m freestyle, missed out on a place in the last Olympics in Athens in 2004 when controversial former performance director Bill Sweetenham refused to pick him after missing the selection time by one-hundredth of a second.

"I didn't do Athens so as far as the team is concerned in Athens I don't know what happened," said the 38-year-old former short course world record holder. "But from my own personal feeling of those years where I was under Bill's reign, it's a lot more relaxed. I've found the team a lot more relaxed."

He added: "I wouldn't say any bad things about Bill. I think he did good things for the British team at the grassroots level and I think we are getting some positive and good results off the back of that.

"But my personal feeling coming into the team now is that there hasn't been any pack drills and that was my main concern when I was part of the team before.

"Coming back this time, two years later on, I found it a lot more relaxed, a lot more positive and I think we'll see the results off the back of that."
