Foster triumphs as records tumble

Three Commonwealth records fell and Mark Foster overcame the zip on his swimsuit popping just before his race to qualify for his fifth Olympics at an eventful finals session at the trials in Sheffield.

The British record fell in the 200 metres individual medley for the fourth successive race courtesy of James Goddard, Rebecca Adlington lowered her own mark in the 400m freestyle and Chris Cook rose to fourth in the world this year in the 100m breaststroke as he became the first Briton to dip below 60 seconds.

Foster led from the front to touch in 22.30seconds ahead of national record holder Simon Burnett but admitted it had not been a straightforward morning, saying: "I bent down and the zip popped at the front. But fortunately I had my old legs on underneath."

The 37-year-old - now the first English swimmer and first British male swimmer to qualify for five Games - has previously been non-committal about whether he would travel to Beijing, only wanting to go if he can challenge the likes of Eamon Sullivan and Alain Bernard who have traded the world record in recent weeks.

When asked if he had any doubts over going, however, he added: "Probably not."

Goddard's determination not to be beaten paid off when he passed Liam Tancock in the final metres to win the 200m individual medley and usurp the Commonwealth record his Loughborough team-mate set on Tuesday.

Cook put himself in medal contention when he broke the 60-second barrier in the 100m breaststroke to earn a trip to China.

The City of Newcastle swimmer was battling with former world 50m world champion James Gibson but led all the way to win in 59.88 with Gibson pipped by Kristopher Gilchrist.

Adlington led from the front with Jo Jackson in the 400m free, going away in the last 100m to lower her own national record she set on Tuesday to 4:04.50, eclipsing Australian Linda Mackenzie's Commonwealth mark.

Gemma Spofforth qualified in the 100m backstroke with 17-year-old Lizzie Simmonds meaning there is as yet no room on the team for Mel Marshall - excluded from yesterday's 100m freestyle final - or former world 200m backstroke champion Katy Sexton.
