Franchitti claims rain-hit Indy 500

Scotland's Dario Franchitti capitalised on some bad weather to win the rain-shortened Indianapolis 500.

Canadian Club driver Franchitti captured his first Indy 500 victory when the race, which lasted just 166 laps, ended prematurely due to torrential rain at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Franchitti was the leader when the race restarted on lap 162 before 20-year-old Marco Andretti crashed along the backstretch, prompting a caution period before the heavens opened. The 34-year-old eventually sealed victory ahead of New Zealander Scott Dixon.

Dixon, driving for Target Chip Ganassi, took over at the top of the IRL standings.

After becoming the first Scot to win the race since Jim Clark in 1965, he said: "I can hardly believe it. Who could have thought it? Now I know what it means to win this race.

"We cut a tyre on some debris and had to make a pit stop on lap 143. I was trying to save fuel but when it went green, I had to go. I can't believe it. I have to thank my whole team. This is awesome. To be a member of this club is fantastic."
