Franklin strikes for Black Caps

James Franklin took both wickets as Sri Lanka lost Sanath Jayasuriya early on the way to 69 for two after 15 overs of their World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at Sabina Park.

The 1996 Cup winners chose to bat first on a sunny morning when the new-ball threat expected from Shane Bond did not materialise.

Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara were therefore able to gather some momentum in a half-century second-wicket stand on a pitch offering pace and bounce.

Bond's first over was poorly directed and went for nine runs, made up of two leg-glances for four and a wide.

Franklin found his bearings more quickly and was rewarded with the first breakthrough in his second over - and another success 54 runs later.

Jayasuriya was being targeted by Bond in the pre-match bluster - but it was the left-armer who got Sri Lanka's danger man, bowled aiming across a full ball.

Tharanga (41no) might have gone for just one run had Ross Taylor's throw from cover hit one stump as a fretful Jayasuriya pushed for a single to get off the mark.

That was as close as the Kiwis came, though, until Sangakkara tried to hit Franklin over the top and instead mistimed a catch low to captain Stephen Fleming at mid-on.
