Friedel - Blunder made Carson stronger

Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel has praised Aston Villa counterpart Scott Carson for overcoming his England nightmare and believes he will be a strong challenger for the number one shirt under new manager Fabio Capello.

Carson's blunder on his competitive international debut handed Croatia their opening goal in a 3-2 win at Wembley which eliminated England from Euro 2008 but Friedel believes Carson's reaction will earn him a place in Capello's first squad to face Switzerland.

"Scott is a good keeper. The best time to tell what a keeper is really made of is when they go through an adverse time. Well now you know that Scott is a good keeper. He went through some public humiliation via the media the day after the Croatia game and for a few weeks after - but he has been tremendous since," said Friedel.

"I am sure he will be in the reckoning for the England number one in the future."

Friedel added: "I was fortunate enough to play with Galatasaray and Liverpool and, when you make mistakes at clubs that size, they are highlighted. It is natural.

"It is no problem, you take it on the chin, then wake up the next day and you get on with your job. As long you are strong inside, you've got no problems.

"Scott has come through after his mistake fantastically well and I am fairly certain he will be involved in the next squad and I am fairly certain he will be given the chance to impress Mr Capello."
