Fuming Monty shuns reporters

After a press conference on the eve of the Open that amounted to 3,677 words, Colin Montgomerie limited himself to just six after signing for a two-over 73 at Carnoustie.

Asked to speak to waiting reporters the Scot, making his 63rd attempt to win a major, told a press officer: "I would rather not, thank you."

And with that he went straight to the practice putting green.

Montgomerie, confidence high after ending 19 months without a victory at the European Open two weeks ago, had birdies on the sixth and 15th, but there were also four bogeys on his card, including two of the last three holes.

Two over was also the start made by fellow Scot Paul Lawrie, whose victory on the course in 1999 remains Europe's last major success.

Lawrie, paired with Tiger Woods and Justin Rose, did at least finish on a high note, making birdie on the 18th just as he had to clinch his play-off win eight years ago.

The Aberdeen golfer double-bogeyed the third after spinning back into Jockie's Burn - as did Rose - but covered the rest in level par.

It was the same score that Lawrie began with last time, but he was only three off the lead that day.
