Gabbidon: Don't say I don't care

Wales defender Danny Gabbidon has defended himself against accusations that he does not care about playing for his country in the wake of the disastrous defeat in Cyprus.

The West Ham player has taken much of the flak for Saturday's dreadful 3-1 reverse, but he insisted that boss John Toshack has never given any hint that he was about to quit.

Gabbidon said: "Nobody can say I don't care. Obviously I was disappointed with the game and my performance. But we have to dig ourselves out of this hole. For people to say that I don't care is nonsense. I have shown every time that I try to give 100%. People can say what they want, I am not worried about that."

He added: "There were problems in the second half and we conceded bad goals. We must accept that we have to do better.

"I can't really complain about what has been said about us, it is all fair comment and we know we were poor.

"We just were not at the races and the boss was very upset because we did not come out after the break as a team."

The Wales squad headed for San Marino and another Euro 2008 qualifier on Wednesday, one that they know they dare not lose.

There are claims that Gabbidon could be dropped for the match, but Toshack has made a special point of holding a private meeting with the player to tell him he is crucial to his plans.

He added: "You hear things said about my place being under threat, but I have to accept that and if the boss thinks there is someone else who can come in and do better than that, it is his decision.

"I always want to play for Wales, and win. It is not as if I do not care or there is something wrong with my body language, quite the opposite. I don't believe anyone could say I was not trying."
